There has been a report of a Summerville High student being diagnosed with MRSA (methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus) staph infection. This situation occurred in early September. There is no indication that the student actually became infected at the school. This student has fully recuperated, has returned to school, and is doing fine.
This was an isolated incident and there is no information to indicate this infection has been spread to anyone else. The source of the student's infection is unknown and records show the infection was treated as an abscess with excellent recovery expectations.
We have been working with DHEC and the Health Department who advise us that these infections are usually isolated and can occur anywhere. DHEC advises that the best prevention for this infection is good hygiene. It is always good practice to wash hands regularly, use anti-bacterial hand cleansers, and keep open cuts or sores properly sanitized and bandaged. The nurse is available to assist in any questionable circumstances at the school.
Please know that it is standard procedure at Summerville High to clean restrooms and all athletic areas daily and to also disinfect these areas daily. If you have any questions about this infection, DHEC advises parents to contact your Health Department or your family doctor.
Our goal, as always, is to provide as clean and safe environment as possible to our students and parents. Thank you for your continued efforts at Summerville High School.
